Scarborough Chess Congress

2016 Details

The Scarborough Chess Congress is being held in the Spa Centre from the 21st until the 23rd of October 2016.

There will be five sections, the Foundation (U120), Minor (U135), Intermediate (U150), Major (U170) and Open. Download Event PDF for more information about the congress and to send postal entries.


The Aug 2016 ECF grading list will be used. Players not in possession of a current grade must state their last published grade and the year to which it applied. Players with no official grading must give an estimate of their playing strength with evidence or a reference by a known player. For more information on grading download the event PDF above.

Rate of Play

In all sections: All moves in 110 minutes with 10 second increment added with each move.

Round Times

Round 1: Friday October 21st 7.00pm to 11.00pm.
Round 2: Saturday October 22nd 9.30am to 1.30pm
Round 3: Saturday October 22nd 2.15pm to 6.15pm
Round 4: Sunday October 23rd 9.30am to 1.30pm
Round 5: Sunday October 23rd 2.15pm to 6.15pm

Prize giving to follow as soon as possible once all games have been finished.

Follow The Tournament

Using DGT boards in the open for the top boards the Congress makes it very easy for anyone interested to follow this event. The live DGT stream links will be published in this box. We will also try to keep the website up to date while the lower sections progress.

Prize Money

A total of £5800 prize money is up for grabs at this years event. The Open, Major, Intermediate, Minor and Foundation all have the a first place prize of £500, second place prize of £250, third of £150 and fourth place prize of £100. Grading prizes are also included in these sections.

This year the best Junior, Veteran and Woman prizes are all £100. The junior prize is for players under 18 on 01/01/16 and the Veteran prize is avalible for anyone over 65 on 01/01/16

The Scarborough Chess Congress is run by FIDE titled arbiters.

People from all over the UK and all ages come to play at the Scarborough chess congress. We have Junior and Veteran prizes.

High Standard Open

Masters and strong players from all over the UK come to Scarborough to take part in Scarboroughs Open.

Scarborough Chess Venue

The Spa is a multi purpose venue on the Yorkshire coast, it has held the Scarborough Chess Congress for many years. The spa provides places to analyse games, places to eat and other entertainment.
